My Year in Music

Oh it’s the most wonderful time of year, it’s Spotify Wrapped day! Every year I get overly exciting for a personalised playlist and stats about who I’ve been listening to this year, even though I already know because I’m the one doing the listening. Either way, this is a great old day.

Every year I document my stats on my blog, more so for myself, but if you fancy a gander, you can find them all here: 2015, 2016, 2017.

Top 5 Artists

1) Bastille (Last Year: 1)

MOST LISTENED TO

best tracks november

Most Listened To is a little series we dip into every now and then to share some of the tracks that I’m loving at the minute. I log into Obscurify to analyse my Spotify data and pick out the top 10 most listened to tracks of the last six weeks, though I do kind of cheat and set a rule so that there can only be one song per artist represented.

Since my last ‘Most Listened To’ post I’ve been settling into a new job, running a hell of a lot for Movember and trying to settle back into a ‘normal’ life after ten months of alternating between working for myself and travelling, it’s been a year.

1) Baby – Clean Bandit + Marina + Luis Fonsi

It’s no secret that I am a HUGE Marina Diamandis fan, I truly believe she’s one of the most talented lyricists of our time and brings such a unique viewpoint to pop that others simply don’t have.

As a long time Marina stan, would I have ever seen a collaboration with Clean Bandit coming? Of course, they dropped a track at Glasto last year and Marina’s boyfriend is bloody in the band. Would I have expected a Luis Fonsi collab?

Fuck no.

But I fucking love it. This is a sad bop, like ‘Happier’ below. It’s a certified tune, Marina’s angelic voice ties with Fonsi’s really well and they make this track endlessly fun, the choruses are frequent but not repetitive, the message is clear and the beats are mint. BANGER.

MOST LISTENED TO

It’s not been long since my last edition of Most Listened To but we’ve bumped it up the schedule a bit as I’m spending much of the next month travelling around, so here’s some of the tracks I can’t stop listening to at the minute.

Catch the songs I was loving a few weeks back here. The only rule we have here is that only one song per artist can be featured in the top 10.

1) Quarter Past Midnight – Bastille

Bastille’s first track from their as-of-yet titled third album dropped last week and it’s my song of the week, month, year, century. This song really does mark a slight change in Bastille’s genre, they keep describing this upcoming album as an ‘apocalyptic party album’ and Quarter Past Midnight is exactly that. It’s got levels on levels, synth on synth and it’s as lyrically polished as we expect Bastille songs to be at this point.

MOST LISTENED TO

MLT3

Welcome to this totally narcissistic and self-serving blog series where I laud about the music I’ve been listening to over the last few weeks, as if my music taste is something to shout over. Well I think it is, because it’s my music taste, of course I like it.

Anyway this ramble is going on like an artist between songs at a gig who’s just a tad nervous. Catch the songs I was loving a few weeks back here. I calculate these songs using Obscurify and have my own little golden rule of only included one main song per artist, otherwise this month we’d have two Panic! At The Disco tracks.

1) Selfish Love – Jessie Ware

Ever since my sister put on one of Jessie’s earliest tracks in her car many moons ago, I’ve been enamoured with her voice. But I never really listen to her enough, now I’m rectifying that awful mistake by binging on ‘This is: Jessie Ware’, her latest album ‘Glasshouse’ and her fucking amazing podcast with her mum ‘Table Manners with Jessie Ware’.

‘Selfish Love’ fits into a niche category of music video, ‘singer kills cheating husband in the pool of their luxurious Californian mansion’. Magnets- Disclosure + Lorde is the only other I know that fits into this weird and wonderful category.

But to actually discuss the song that we’re here to talk about and to not babble about podcasts and murder, ‘Selfish Love’ is a banging tune, it’s my favourite track of her’s. It’s ethereal, powerful, peaceful and suspenseful all at the same time. It’s like if Mr and Mrs Smith were all about sex and power instead of being spies, though that film kinda was all an allegory for sex and their relationship huh?

MOST LISTENED TO

Most listened to

Hello friends, music lovers and people who accidentally clicked this link whilst scrolling through Twitter but have now been ensnared by my devilish good looks and my fancy new blog interface.

A few weeks ago I kicked off a new series all about the songs that I’m actually listening to all the time, as presented to me via my favourite online gizmo, Obscurify. Last time’s made sense, it was generally all current tracks and stuff that’s been around recently or from my favourite artists. One slight adjustment I’ve made is to only feature one song from each artist, as the recent album releases from The Wombats and Charlie Barnes did begin to dominate.

This time I’ve kinda gone all over the place, from murderous album tracks to one of the greatest karaoke songs of all time.

1) STRANGERS – SIGRID

This song featured as number 4 in my last post, it’s been a slow burn for me. You know, from listening to almost all the time to ‘I can’t sleep with good conscience unless I listen to this song whilst brushing my teeth before bed’. If that’s not the mark of an earworm, I don’t know what is. Continue Reading →
