MUSIC OF THE MONTH – OCTOBER 2017

Another month has come and gone, meaning there’s that much more music to delve into from the last 31 days.

Take a look back at September‘s top hits, then move ahead to this month’s.

 Bubblegum – YONAKA

Drop this one when wanting to feel empowered about everything in your life. Everything about this song is well constructed, from the heavy chorus instrumentals to the vocals you can see yourself screeching out in the shower.

That Don’t Impress Me Much – HAIM

From a cover on a big Aussie radio station to Spotify, the HAIM sisters have brought out an incredible cover of Shania Twain’s classic hit and they smash it perfectly. Go HAIM or go home.

Holy Mountain – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

2017 really is the year of the Gallaghers. Is that a sentence we expected to read in the 90’s? I definitely didn’t as I spent most of the 90’s I was around for unable to read.

Holy Mountain is an indie hit of massive proportions, it’s catchy, it’s got a few quirks but it’s simple enough to sing and dance along to in any mediocre pub.

The overlay is a little extra, but it still works.

Habits – Marmozets

Alt-rock has never sounded better than Habits.

Entrancing vocals, guitar for absolute days and everything else being just as on point. Habits is an absolute success. Serene solos feel just as appropriate as the intense guitar and drum beats, it’s a cohesive, versatile track nailing everything it attempts to do.

Pills – St. Vincent

It’s difficult to choose one or two standout tracks from St. Vincent’s new album ‘MASSEDUCTION’ as it’s all pretty fantastic. Pills is a unique, cheerful little ditty about the medicinal drug culture of the world. You’ll be singing ‘Pills to fuck, pills to sleep’ as if it’s a kids show jingle.

On The Loose – Niall Horan

It’s a big month for 1D alum with two former members dropping some new music, but only one has made it into this list, make of that what you will. Niall’s album Flicker includes this pretty sweet sounding track. Yes it’s a token track about a girl he fancies living her life, not the most original concept, but it’s a good listen.

Meaning of Life – Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson is one of those special pop artists that keeps producing bops on and on, she grows with her career and her music benefits from it. Sure it’s no ‘Breakaway’, but nothing ever will be.

Light The Way – Mikky Ekko

Ekko’s latest track is an indie dream come true. A mixture of steady guitar, layered vocals and banging choruses = a true banger of 2017.

Feelings – Hayley Kiyoko

Hayley Kiyoko has one of those relaxing, diverse voices that can master pop and any other genre. She’s at her best here.

New Rules – Acoustic – Dua Lipa

‘New Rules’ has got to be one of the biggest songs of the year, especially here in the UK. Now Dua Lipa has dropped an acoustic version, not so long after a different acoustic version went viral. It’s a real treat on the ears and attests to Lipa’s diversity as a vocal artist.

TL;DR Dua Lipa is fantastic.

As always you can find all of the tracks listed here:
