My Year in Music

This picture is so grainy, but natural light is a luxury during winter in the UK

Today Spotify released their ‘Year in Music’ feature, which tells you all about your music preferences throughout the year as well as what was popular globally! This is the first year I’ve had Spotify for long enough to get the benefit of Year in Music, as last year I only started using Spotify again, after not using it for years, in December.

If you don’t like Maroon 5, turn back now.

First song listened to in 2015:

Cool Kids – Echosmith

I used to listen to this on repeat a lot towards the end of last year, so I’m not surprised it ended up being the first song I listened to in the year!

Top 5 Artists:

1) Maroon 5

2) Marina and the Diamonds

3) Sia

4) Florence and the Machine

5) Lorde

These 5 are all some of my favourite artists of all time, so it’s a very good representation of me! Though, I think Sia is on there more so because I listened to 1,000 forms of fear a billion times, but I need to delve more into her old stuff, I haven’t listened to that so much.

I listened to Maroon 5 an embarrassingly huge amount of times, let’s just say you could add the amount of times I streamed the following 4 and still not reach the amount I streamed Maroon 5.

I’m a little shocked Lorde is all the way in 5th, her music is probably my favourite of all time, although she did only bring out one new song this year and it’s fairly recent. I made a post all about it!

Top 5 Albums:

1) Maroon 5 – It Won’t Be Soon Before Long

2) Maroon 5 – Hands All Over

3) Marina and the Diamonds – Froot

4) Florence and the Machine – How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful

5) Maroon 5 – V

I don’t really agree too much with this one, V isn’t one of my favourite albums at all, I just really like a few of the songs (Maps and Sugar), and I like Hands All Over but it’s not one of my favourites. I think it’s the case that I listened to a few songs a ton, and it somehow put them on my top 5 albums.

Froot and How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful definitely deserve their spots!

Troye Sivan’s Blue Neighbourhood has only recently come out, but I believe that would have definitely featured had there been time, and I’m surprised Badlands by Halsey didn’t make it either!

Top Tracks:

1) Maroon 5 – Makes Me Wonder

2) Maroon 5 – Maps

3) Maroon 5 – Sugar

4) Hozier – Someone New

5) Maroon 5 – Misery

WOW listening to Maroon 5 on the way to uni constantly really affected the outcome of my year in music, but all of these are absolute jams so I don’t care at all. I have definitely skewed it by having Maroon 5’s entire discography as one of the only things saved to listen to offline on my phone.

It’s also strange that only 1 out of my top 5 artists appeared in this list!

I got into Someone New because Natalie Dormer was in the music video and I am in love with Natalie Dormer, and sweet bejesus, that video only made me love her even more. Please marry me Natalie.

There are so many songs I’m surprised didn’t make it, like Forget by Marina and the Diamonds! I listen to that song SO much, as well as Magnets by Disclosure ft Lorde, but I guess that came out too late in the year.

I also listened to 18,000 minutes of music this year, 465 different artists and 1,071 different tracks.

Seasonally, the artists I loved were:

Winter:

Maroon 5

Marina and the Diamonds

Sia

Spring:

Maroon 5

Marina and the Diamonds

MisterWives

Summer:

Maroon 5

Marina and the Diamonds

Sia

Autumn:

Maroon 5

Florence and the Machine

Disclosure

So my music taste did not change at all throughout the year, not even slightly. And I’m 100% Disclosure is only there because of their collab with Lorde. I like Disclosure, but I haven’t really listened to anything but Magnets.

I do thing this list was skewed by how intensely I listened to Maroon 5 in the first few months of the year, since I had never listened to any album except Overexposed, which I used to listen to on repeat when I worked in an office during the summer of 2012. Good times.

I think this list would have been VERY different had 1989 by Taylor Swift been on Spotify, I love me some Out of the Woods, Blank Space, Wildest Dreams, Welcome to New York…I love it all. Some of my other favourite bands are missing, like Haim and Paramore, but they didn’t bring out any new music this year, sorry guys, maybe next year!

Here are 2 of my Spotify playlists, the first is generated by Spotify with 100 songs I loved this year according to them! Although, I question some of the choices since they’re songs I skip over:

This one is my own playlist that I add songs I love at the minute to, this is a better playlist in my opinion:

Now, excuse me as I go and unabashedly listen to Maroon 5 for the 45,000th time this year.
